AUDACITY TO ACT
by Anthony W. Johnson

AN ACTOR'S TOOLBOX TOWARDS GREATNESS

Audacity to Act: An Actor’s Toolbox Towards Greatness (Volume One) is a powerful hybrid of technical textbook and personal memoir by award‑winning director, choreographer, and educator Anthony W. Johnson.

Written for actors, teachers, and serious students of the craft, this first volume reimagines acting training as a rigorous four‑year conservatory in book form. Johnson weaves together the major methods—Stanislavski, Strasberg, Chekhov, Meisner, Hagen, Shurtleff, and Adler—then pushes beyond them with physical theater, Laban, animal work, masks, Black drama, Soviet and Chinese theater, philosophy, and on‑camera technique.

Part manifesto, part masterclass, Audacity to Act challenges performers to treat the stage and screen as sacred spaces rather than stepping stones to fame. Johnson insists that there are “no bad scripts”—only unrealized choices—and gives actors a concrete “toolbox” and “first‑aid kit” for auditions, cold reads, self‑tapes, industry survival, and lifelong growth.

From foundational work in drama, voice, and body, to advanced exercises in energy, improvisation, and the business of unions and guilds, this book is designed to create versatile, disciplined, imaginative artists who can thrive in theater, film, television, and beyond.

Audacity to Act is not just something you read; it’s a training ground you live in—provocative, comprehensive, and unapologetically devoted to excellence.

“Having a ‘following’ does not replace having an education.”

“I cannot accept that everyone has the right to the arts if their hearts linger in apathy. It’s a frightening thought that we simultaneously crave representation yet abandon the art that gives it substance.”

“It is not enough to merely follow; actors must have the courage to retreat from complacency and ignorance and conjure new narratives, rather than simply mindlessly reciting old ones.”

“Acting requires education and rigorous discipline, not just a game of auditions.”

“A book will not grant you the sophistication or technique which their works deserve.” (on Brecht & Molière)
